Orange rays of morning light filter through the window at the far end of Sofia's [[bedroom]]. Blurry lines of shadow drift across the floor, the soft flickering slowly waking her up. She sits up, wincing slightly, her eyes focusing on the [[cracks]] in the window.!@@color:yellow;"""== bedroom =="""@@
Sofia's bedroom is small and cramped. Dirty carpeting lines the floor, peeling up at the edges. A couple of [[broken|cracks]], dusty windows let in light, an air purifier humming softly beneath one. A twin bed is tucked in the corner, a nightstand next to it with a clock radio, along with a few filter masks and her asthma inhaler.
Two desks sit side by side on the long wall of the room, one holding an old ham radio station with a microphone and Morse Code key, the other home to a small desktop computer and a few stacks of books.
A large wooden dresser sits against the wall. A few drawers are filled with clothing, but the bottom two drawers are filled with dry goods -- canned soup, noodles, tinned fish, and the like. More books are shelved on a wooden bookshelf on top of the dresser.!/\/\/ cracks /\/\/
Long ago, she had taped over the cracks in the windows to prevent further damage, but the tape is starting to peel, both sides caked with brown dust. She glances past the tape, looking out through the haze and dust into the [[city]], the tape tracing the bold outline of long-forgotten [[mountains]].!@@color:lightblue;/\ /\ mountains /\ /\@@!@@color:purple;[]_[]@@ @@color:pink;city@@ @@color:purple;_[]_@@
The streets are mostly abandoned. Sidewalks are mangled, the pavement pushing up from the surface in mountains and valleys. The occasional lamppost or utility pole sticks up, any remaining metal completely rusted, if they haven't been scavenged yet.
Hot, hazy air whistles between the buildings in the neighborhood that remain standing -- a small [[convenience store]] next to a gas station, a [[pharmacy]], and a [[library]].
In the rubble of the destroyed buildings, people have put up make-shift housing -- tents with sleeping bags, along with the occasional more complex structure made from items scavenged from local stores.
Storm drains glow with pink and purple light. A run-down subway station has steps leading [[underground]].
[[🏠 back home|bedroom]]!convenience store
The local 24/7 convenience store. It's been here the entire time Sophie's lived at her current place.
[[🚪 back outside|city]]!pharmacy
A local pharmacy; it's long been ransacked. The shelving -- what's left of it -- is mostly bare, save for a few snacks and the occasional bit of stationary. Sofia stocked up on what she could for her asthma before they closed, and so far, it's been enough.
[[🚪 back outside|city]]!library
A small branch of the local library.

Worn steps lead down to abandoned subway and steam tunnels. Harsh shadows cast by flickering old florescent lights augmented with pink-tinted LED lighting. Cabling strung up along old signs form a make-shift [[network]].
A few stalls in the corner are selling old handheld devices modified for wireless communication, bottled water and masks (at a hefty markup), and building materials.
